Why You Should Ditch Page Builders and Embrace Gutenberg in WordPress

For years, page builders like Elementor, Divi, and Beaver Builder have been the go-to tools for creating WordPress websites. They offer drag-and-drop functionality and a range of design options, making them attractive to non-developers and agencies alike. However, as WordPress evolves, it has become increasingly clear that relying on page builders is not the best long-term solution. The native WordPress editor, Gutenberg, has matured significantly and is now a viable alternative that eliminates many of the downsides of page builders. Here’s why you should consider moving away from page builders and embracing Gutenberg blocks instead. To learn more, read our guide on Website Redesign.

Code Bloat Slows Down Your Website

One of the biggest drawbacks of page builders is the sheer amount of extra code they generate. When you use Elementor, Divi, or other page builders, your website gets weighed down with excessive inline styles, unnecessary scripts, and bloated HTML. This impacts your site’s performance, leading to slower page load times, SEO issues, and a poor user experience. In contrast, Gutenberg is leaner and more optimized, resulting in faster websites that perform better in search engines and provide a smoother experience for visitors.

JavaScript Conflicts and Compatibility Issues

Another major headache with page builders is their tendency to introduce JavaScript conflicts. Because these tools rely on a complex web of JavaScript and CSS frameworks, they often clash with other plugins, themes, or even WordPress updates. This can lead to broken layouts, unexpected bugs, and significant development time spent troubleshooting conflicts. With Gutenberg, you’re working with the native WordPress ecosystem, which drastically reduces these issues and ensures better compatibility with future updates.

Development Time and Costs Skyrocket

If your website relies on multiple page builders, maintaining it becomes a nightmare. Each page builder has its own interface, workflow, and quirks, which means hiring a developer with expertise in all of them becomes essential—and expensive. Developers skilled in multiple page builders typically charge more because of the extra time required to switch between different frameworks and troubleshoot builder-specific issues. Standardizing your site around Gutenberg eliminates this problem, making it easier and more cost-effective to manage your WordPress site in the long run.

Page Builders Won’t Last Forever

Investing heavily in page builders today is a risk because they won’t be around forever. WordPress is continuously evolving, and the Gutenberg editor is the future of the platform. At some point, major page builders will stop receiving updates or will require expensive overhauls to keep up with WordPress changes. This means any money spent on custom development with these builders is essentially wasted when you eventually need to rebuild those pages from scratch.

Future-Proof Your Website with Gutenberg

Gutenberg is not just a replacement for page builders—it’s the direction WordPress is headed. It offers cleaner code, better performance, fewer conflicts, and lower development costs. By making the switch now, you ensure your site remains scalable, maintainable, and fully supported by WordPress for years to come.

If you’re still using page builders, now is the time to start transitioning. The longer you wait, the more technical debt you accumulate, and the harder it will be to migrate. Ditch the bloat, embrace Gutenberg, and future-proof your WordPress site today!

My previous web developer who I was very happy with retired and I was pretty sad about it because it seems now days it is hard to hire a web developer close by with a good set of skills who is interested in helping small business at reasonable prices. Then I found Watermelon and I have been very happy. They are responsive, are able to solve problems, and work at reasonable prices.

Great work and amazing service! We're a non-profit, and our priorities are always focused on maintaining the Astoria Column. We had a website built by someone else a few years ago, but without regular updating and maintenance, sections of our site were no longer functional. Joanna and the rest of the team came in and had everything working within a week and it's been smooth sailing since then!
