What’s the Smartest Way to Store Files in the Cloud?

A Brief Guide for WordPress Users

An important part of making a WordPress site fast is a Content Delivery Network (CDN). A CDN is a system of distributed servers that delivers web content to users based on their geographic location. So instead of accessing media directly from your web server, a user in Georgia might be served a file from a CloudFlare server in Atlanta, reducing load times and bandwidth usage. For WordPress websites, especially those with high traffic or media-heavy pages, a CDN is essential for enhancing performance, improving user experience, and boosting SEO rankings by reducing page load times.

Now, let’s explore various cloud storage options for WordPress, their costs based on an average of 50GB (generous for most small businesses) of storage, and how they affect website performance.

1. Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service)
Scalable, moderately priced, requires technical setup

ConsSetup complexity, potential latency for low-traffic sites.

Total First Month$10.06 + consultant cost = $160.06 – $310.06.
Load TimeWithout CDN: 600ms to 1.2s.
With CDN (CloudFront): 300ms to 700ms globally.
Total Yearly$120.72/year (excluding consultant cost).

2. Google Cloud Storage
Fast, reliable, higher cost and more complex to configure

FeatureDetails
ProsFast load times, global network, strong security.
ConsHigher pricing for frequent access, setup difficulty.

Total First Month$13.18 + consultant cost = $213.18 – $413.18.

Watermelon Web Works has been incredible to work with. They are patient, understanding, and quick to answer any questions (or emergencies) you might have. After switching over to them to help re-vamp our online retail store, we hired them to build our wholesale website as well. I can't recommend them enough - Thank you team!

My previous web developer who I was very happy with retired and I was pretty sad about it because it seems now days it is hard to hire a web developer close by with a good set of skills who is interested in helping small business at reasonable prices. Then I found Watermelon and I have been very happy. They are responsive, are able to solve problems, and work at reasonable prices.

Great work and amazing service! We're a non-profit, and our priorities are always focused on maintaining the Astoria Column. We had a website built by someone else a few years ago, but without regular updating and maintenance, sections of our site were no longer functional. Joanna and the rest of the team came in and had everything working within a week and it's been smooth sailing since then!
